Timetable: Soo Line - Main Line - Gladstone to Rhinelander
The Soo Line extended west from Gladstone to Rhinelander, WI. This line was completed in 1902 and continues today, except between Larch (near North Escanaba) and Hermansville, which was abandoned in 1999.

Time Line
1888. This Soo Line main track through the Upper Peninsula was built and opened in 1888. Originally known as the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie railroad, it became the Soo Line railroad in 1961. The railroad also builds the international bridge over the Sault straits to Canada in 1888. It is called the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Company and owned jointly by the Canadian Pacific, DSS&A and the MStP&SSM. [MRL]
1902. The MStP&SSM, in conjunction with the DSS&A, established the Sault Ste. Marie Depot Company and a Union Depot and track 1/2 mile long.
1943. SNAPSHOT. The railroad ran one round-trip passenger train bertween Gladstone and Rhinelander daily. trains #7 and #8 made the 126 mile trip in about 8 hours, with Michigan stops at Hermansville and Faithorn. Two way freight trains operated each way, one daily and one M-W-F. [ETT-1943]
1987. The Soo Line was purchased by the Wisconsin Central. It later became the Union Pacific (temporarily) and then Canadian National.
1999. The portion of the line from Larch (near North Escanaba) and Hermansville was abandoned with trackage rights used on the C&NW instead. At some point, the E&LS also gained trackage rights on this route, rather than using their original line to Channing to access their former Milwaukee Road trackage to Green Bay.
