Time Line

1902. The GR&I extends train service to Northport from Traverse City over the tracks of the Traverse City, Leelanau & Manistique Railroad. [MCR-1903]

1909. (Under GR&I ownership). From Traverse City to Leelanau. The general condition of the track, road bed, surface and alignment is good. This branch is generally fenced and the fence is in first-class condition. All highway crossings and signs are in good repair. No stations on this line of any importance between Traverse City and Northport. Bridge structures are all in good repair; however, none of them are provided with inside guard rails. The traffic on this division is light. Right of way is well cleared of weeds. Switch stands provided with double targets, and locks; no switch light, no night trains. [MCR-1909]

1923. Thirty six days of isolation for six Leelanau county towns, a record for northern Michigan, was broken when a locomotive and three cars, bearing belated baggage, produce and scores of curious country folk, pulled in at the M&NE station at Northport Monday. A crew of nearly 200 railroad men and volunteers late Sunday cleared away the last of the huge drifts that have been cut off all communications between Traverse City and Leelanau bay coast towns for more than a month. Snow had piled steadily since the heavy storm of March 11, and it took more than a week to dig out the 24 miles of the Northport branch. [DFP-1923-0407]
