• March 31: Conrail Shared Assets closes FN interlocking tower in Trenton. It is now remotely operated from the Bridge tower (former NYC Rouge Bridge). The tower is torn down on February 17, 2004.

• June: CSX removes signals, electric switches and switch locks from their line between Mershon (West Saginaw) and Midland.

• July 29: CSX and Mid-Michigan Railroad abandon about 5 miles of track between Alma and Elwell in Gratiot County.  [STB]

• September 18: Cleveland Cliffs announces that the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad will be absorbed into CC as a division. Since 2001, CC has purchased the remaining shares of stock not owned by the company.

• Fall: The City of Detroit abandons its trolley system on Washington Blvd. [MRC/2-2004]

• November: Conrail shared assets removed the double slip switches at West Detroit. They were replaced with traditional cross-overs.  West Detroit also received new signals. [MRC/2-2004]

• November: Conrail shared assets combines CP Scotten and CP Spring Works into one control point, known as CP Scotten. [MRC/2-2004]

• November: CSX begins construction on a new CSXT Intermodal yard in the Livernois Avenue complex. The new yard is being built on the site of the NYC old receiving yard and stockyards. Planned to be in-service in Spring, 2004. [MRC/2-2004]

• SNAPSHOT: The Ann Arbor Railroad, operating between Toledo and Osmer, just north of Ann Arbor, handled about 40,000 cars this year. A new vehicle loading facility in Toledo produces 85-90 loads per day. Recycled plastic is being handled in Dundee and Visteon in Saline produces 12 cars daily. Interchange with the TSBY at Osmer averages about 80 cars per week. [MRC/2-2004]

• November 10: The former Detroit Terminal Railroad diamond at Ford Junction on GTW's Holly Subdivision in Detroit was removed.  Former DTRR industries west of Ford Jct. are now served from the west. [MRC/2-2004]
