Notes

Time Line

1887. An inspection of the MC and GT interlocking switch at this point will be made and if it proves satisfactory it will be put in operation along with the entire line of the C&GT railway. Railroad Commissioner Rich and the officials of the several roads running through Lansing will conduct the examination. [LFJ-1887-1205]

1887. December 14. People approaching the city (Lansing) by Cedar street should bear in mind that the interlocking and derailing switch is now in operation, and all trains pass that point with considerable speed. They should therefore be cautious in going upon the crossing. [LSJ-1887-1214]

1888. January. Some difficulty is being had with the interlocking switch at the GT and trains do not pull in with their usual speed. An experienced railroad man informed the reporter that the cables to the switches would not work successfully as long as they were exposed to the elements. They should be protected by boxing. [LSJ-1888-0121]

1888. January 26. To the Editors of THE JOURNAL: I saw an item in the State Republican saying that we were having trouble with the interlocking switch and that trains do not run as fast as they did some time ago. I wish to say that the statement is not true, We are not having any trouble at all. Everything is working all right, and trains pass over the switch as fast as they are allowed- passenger trains at the rate of ten miles per hour and freight trains six miles per hour. C.E. Allen, Superintendent. [LSJ-1888-0126]

1904. the Railroad Commissioner approves a first class interlocking at the crossings of the GTW, MCRR and LSMS at Lansing. This was an all electric crossing installed by the Taylor Signal Co. [MCR-1904]

1923. In the NYC time table, this location was known as "Lansing" and located at mp.58.8, 0.3 miles south of Kalamazoo Street and 1.3 miles south of the Lake Shore station at mp.60.

1935. The interlocking just east of the GTW station, at Cedar street, is a G.R.S. all-electric plant controlling the interlocking facilities for a crossing of the Grand Trunk with the New York Central and the Michigan Central. The crossover used for returning eastbound trains from the station to the eastward track is part of the Cedar Street plant. Traffic locking circuits are provided for the westward track between Washington A venue tower and Cedar Street tower, push-button release facilities being provided. [RSE-1937-04]

1984. The Conrail Saginaw secondary had a three track interchange yard here with the GTW in the southeast quadrant of the crossing. This was just north of the Red Cedar river. [ZTS]
