Merideth was settled as a lumber village about 1884 and at one time had a population of about 1,800 people serving the logging/forest industry.

1877. December 12. Herman Hansen was run over and killed Friday on the A. W. Wright Lumber company's logging railroad, near Meredith. He was employed as car repairer on the road, and fell from the train. [PHTH]

1886. The Roscommon Lumber Company's logging road from Houghton Lake is now connected with the Flint & Pere Marquette at Meredith. The first train passed over the road last week. Wells & Stone have completed a branch road of about two miles' length into their pine southeast of Meredith.
