County: Bay (09)
Bay County, Michigan was created in 1857 from parts of Midland, Saginaw, and Arenac counties. The name "Bay County" refers to the county's location surrounding Saginaw Bay. The county's current size of 443 square miles and 30 miles of shoreline was established in 1883.
The Sauk Indians first settled in the area around 1736. The Ojibway, Ottawa, and Potawatomi Indians also camped in the area. French Voyageurs traded furs with the Ojibway in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
