Arenac County was organized in 1883. The name Arenac comes from the Latin word arena and the Native American word ac. Together, they mean "a sandy place for a good footing".
Arenac County was originally part of Oakland County.In 1857, a large part of Arenac was added to the newly formed Bay County. In 1859, the remaining part of Arenac was added to Bay County. In 1883, Arenac was reorganized as a county with its current boundaries.
Arenac County is located on the shore of Lake Huron in the east central section of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. It covers 368 square miles and has a population of 17,269. The county seat is Standish. [GGAI]
