Tuscola County, Michigan was created on April 1, 1840 from land in Sanilac County>. The county seat is Caro. Before being organized, Tuscola County was attached to Saginaw County for administrative purposes. The word "Tuscola" is a Cherokee word that means "Digging in Many Places".
