Notes

Time Line

1878. In three weeks, the D&BC will be completed to East Saginaw, the line from Vassar {Denmark Jct.] being graded and the iron almost all laid. The D&BC bridge across the Saginaw River is completed. It is the bridge built by Capt. Craw for his proposed Chicago, Saginaw & Canada Railroad, and was bought at a very reasonable rate on the collapse of the -scheme- to bring Craw's project into Saginaw on a line close to and parallel with Jerome's Saginaw & St. Louis Valley Railroad. The line to Bay City is in fair condition and there is every reason to expect an improvement in business of the road under the new management. Mr. Callaway, formally with the Detroit & Milwaukee, will assume the duties of Superintendent on the Bay City Road in a few days. [DFP-1878-1031]

1889. April 2. Th TS&M begins work tomorrow on driving piles for a new railroad bridge across the Saginaw River from the foot of Thompson street. The bridge will be of iron, estimated cost of $25,000 and expected to be complete in July. [SAG-1889-0402]

1889. April 11. The TS&M announces that the bridge will be constructed on a substantial pile and stone abutments and piers. There will be a swing in the bridge with two openings, each 70 feet in width in the clear. The  swing will be located on the easterly side of the river so that the swing will be on a line with the face of the present east dock. The center pier will be 33 feet in width east and west, and there will be extended north and south from the center pier to a distance of 140 feet on each side, pile and crib work for the protection of said pier against ice and other dangers. West of the pier will be one opening of 150 feet clear space for the passage of rafts of logs. The bridge will give 10.5 feet clear space between the bottom chord of the bridge and the ordinary low water mark. The bridge will be constructed as a truss bridge and the materials will consist of a combination of iron and wood or all iron. The bridge will have an outside measurement of 20 feet in width. [SCH-1889-0411] The bridge will be built by A. Hobson. [SAG-1889-0412] Iron work will be provided by the Detroit Bridge & Iron Works. [DFP-1889-0416]
