Station: Melbourne, MI

Melbourne was settled about 1868 as the location of Wellington R  Burt’s saw mill and salt block operations  it was on the west side of the Saginaw River about 7 miles north of the City of (west) Saginaw  During its time, this was one of the largest lumber mills in the world  

The Mill burned down in 1876 and was not rebuilt. It had operated for 8 years. Remnants were moved to Zilwaukee.

This mill was on the Jackson Lansing & Saginaw railroad. Note: Burt’s mill burned down 13 years before his railroad (TS&M) was built through here.


Notes 

This was also known as Burt’s Mills.

It was later reported in 1894 that this was a station stop on the Grand Trunk Western line north of Saginaw, line which was originally built by Burt
