Black Lake is located in northwest Presque Isle County and is home to one of Michigan's oldest state parks - dedicated in 1921.
The Detroit & Mackinac railroad had a branch line built north from Onaway which served a gravel quarry about two miles south of the lake. This branch lasted only about 10 years before it was torn up.
1903. The Onaway Limestone Co. is working about 75 men at its big quarry at Black Lake. The Detroit & Mackinac reaches this plant by a five mile spur from Onaway. The quarry company is now shipping sugar beet stone and steam drills are being installed in the main quarry after which the output of the quarry will be heavy. [DFP-1903-1030]
