Notes
This town was the location of the sawmill for the Yuill Brothers Company.
Time Line
1906. February. Yuill Brothers of Vanderbilt, are putting in 7,000,000 feet of logs this winter, 2,000,000 feet of which will be sawed at their mill at Logan and the remainder will be taken to Bay City. The firm has 25 jobbers putting in logs. [DFP-1906-0228]
1908. January 25. Fire in the immense lumber yard of Yuill Brothers at Logan destroyed 2,000,000 feet of hemlock and caused a loss of $35,000, which would have been more than tripled had it not been for the arrival of a special train from Wolverine, bearing the fire fighting apparatus of that town and over 200 citizens. The fire department of Vanderbilt, about two miles from Logan also answered the call from Yuill Brothers, driving the distance over rough snow covered roads in record time.
The blaze which is thought to have started by a spark from the mill, originated in the largest tramway of the plant. A high wind was prevailing and the fire quickly communicated to all parts of the tram. A slight variation in the direction of the gale would have resulted in the destruction of the mill and entire village before help could have arrived.
Wolverine, 19 miles away, a special train was made up as soon as the call was received. This conveyed a gasoline fire engine to Logan, which, with the smaller engine from Vanderbilt developed sufficient pumping capacity to cope with the fire. The blaze was not under control until after nightfall, by which time more than half of the lumber stacked had been destroyed.
The fire was one of the most spectacular of all those which have occurred in lumber districts of the lower peninsula in many years. [SAG-1908-0125] Note: Later, the blaze was thought to be an arson, set by an individual who burned down several mills in northern Michigan
1918. July 15. Michigan "pike tourists" (automobile enthusiasts) were hosted at the lumber camp of Yuill brothers, where a regular lumberjack dinner was given in the big mess hall. [SAG-1918-0715]
1928. After many years of activity in the lumber industry of Michigan as the largest operators in the vicinity of Vanderbilt, Yuill Brothers are now offering some very desirable acreage suitable for club ventures and comprising lakes and trout streams. This firm has holdings along the famous Pigeon river, one of the best trout streams in Michigan. Address inquiries to Yuill Brothers, Vanderbilt. [LSJ-1928-0519]
