Sanford Street was the location of the crossing of the GTW Michigan Air Line and the DUR/Eastern Michigan interurban line on Sanford Street. This was protected by a full interlocking system from at least 1920 until 1931.
1931. The MPUC has been notified that the GTW has completed the construction of their new Belt Line in Pontiac and beginning May 18, 1931 will reroute all through freight and passenger trains on the Michigan Air Line over the new Belt Line, which will change in operation will reduce movements over the Sanford Street crossing to purely movements of a switching character and will be limited to but two or three such movements per day and for this reason they have requested permission to discontinue and abandon the interlocking system as well as the safety gates which are operated from the interlocking tower to safeguard traffic on Sanford Street. This will become a stop and proceed crossing. The proposal was approved. [MPUC-1931]
