McBain was settled about 1887 as a sawmill settlement. It became a station on the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern railroad when it came through in 1888. The town was incorporated as a village in 1893 and a city in 1907. [MPN]
McBain was in the southwest corner of Missaukee County about 10 miles south of Lake City.
