This is the first ore dock in Marquette Harbor, built by the Jackson Iron Company in 1855. This was a timber dock and iron was hauled to the dock by mules. The dock was extended in 1888.
Originally, ore was shoveled out of cars onto the dock, where it was again loaded into wheelbarrows and dumped into the hold of what was usually a sailing vessel. [DSS]
Time Line
1863. The Jackson dock is converted over to chutes. [DSS]
1864. The Jackson dock ceases to operate after the Jackson Mine is purchased by Iron Cliffs and begins sending ore to Escanaba. [DSS]
