The DSS&A diesel era, the railroad pushed ore loads from their staging yard up the approach to their downtown ore dock using Alcohol RS-1 diesel locomotives.

Time Line
1966. Deepening the Marquette lower harbor basin to 27 feet to accommodate deep draft vessels has been approved by officials of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The estimated cost is $215,000 plus $12,000 from non-federal sources. The dock area was dredged last fall by the railroad company and now has 22 feet of water. The Corps recently completed a $370,000 rock cribbing project on the lower harbor breakwater last fall. [IDG-1966-0307]
