Location: Negaunee, MI - DSS&A Facilities
The Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic (former MH&O) railroad came through Negaunee on two seperate lines. The original MH&O line came from Eagle Mills along what is now the Iron Ore Heritage Trail. It continued west along the south side of Negaunee and then roughly parallel to Division street in Ishpeming.
The second DSS&A line was the former Marquette & Western railroad which was an upstart competitor of the DSS&A. The DSS&A purchased the M&W within one year of activation. The M&W came into Negaunee from Eagle Mills, parallel but south of the MH&O line and then turned north to the west side of Negaunee, crossing over the MH&O on a trestle. Shortly after the M&W purchase by the MH&O, the trestle was torn down in favor of a junction of the two lines. The M&W established a wooden depot along Rail street between Gold and Silver streets. This was replaced by a Union Station (with the C&NW) on Rail Street, west of Silver Street. Both depots continue to exist as of 2022 but the tracks are long gone.
