Macomb County was established on January 15, 1818 as the third county in the Michigan Territory. It was named after General Alexander Macomb, a decorated veteran of the War of 1812. Macomb was born in Detroit in 1782 and became the Commanding General of the U.S. Army in 1828.

The county was formed from Wayne County and originally covered a much larger area than it does today. The first settlers in Macomb County were the French and the Tucker family, who settled in Harrison and Erin townships between 1758 and 1800. Clinton Township was settled between 1782 and 1800 by the Moravians, Judge Clemens, and the French.

The county seat is Mount Clemens. As of 2020, Macomb County had a population of 881,217 and is the third-most populous county in Michigan. [GGAI]
