The Michigan Central Grand Rapids branch (formerly the Grand Valley railroad) came from Jackson to Grand Rapids via Eaton Rapids and Charlotte. The railroad had yard facilities south of Union Station along the GR&I.

Time Line
1881. The MC finds itself compelled to enlarge its yard room at Grand Rapids, and for this purpose has bought a tract of land at the corner of Wealthy avenue and Ionia street for $7,000. [DFFP-1881-0204]
1923. The MC builds a new 8-stall roundhouse at Hughart Yard, replacing an older version. It is east of the GR&I roundhouse.
