Industry - Mt. Pleasant, MI - Area oil fields

During the year of 1929 there was a major crude oil development in the area of Mt. Pleasant, MI. Between 1931 and 1939 Pere Marquette handled more than 100,0-00 tank cars of oil from the so-called Mt. Pleasant pool, but at the present [1951] time no crude oil is being handled by railroad. Upon the completion of pi8pe line facilities between this field and Toledo, movement of crude oil from the fields so served was diverted from rail haul to pipe line. Oil movement from the areas not served by pipe lines has almost disappeared due to the reduced production. The principal crude oil producing fields in Michigan are now in the Reed City area, and much of this output is being handled by rail from that area by the CC&O to refineries or other rail connections.
