Notes
Time Line
1958. Derailment of a loaded iron ore train near Naults tied up traffic on the Northwestern railroad and left the line without any diesel engines in Stambaugh. As a result, five iron mines in the Iron River area had to stockpile ore until the wreckage could be cleared. Six cars of a 120-car freight were derailed spilling 500 tons of ore along the right of way 15 miles east of Stambaugh, near the Michigan-Wisconsin border. The train was being pulled by three diesel engines enroute from Stambaugh to loading docks at Escanaba. Two of the diesels also ran off the tracks. Cause of the accident was not known. A railroad wrecker was due today from Green Bay, WI to start clearing the wreckage. Spokesman said the line might be tied up for two or three days. [IDG-1958-1024]
