The Huron & Eastern was organized in 1986 to operate for the state and purchase lines in the thumb from CSX and TSBY railroads. This included parts of the old Michigan Central from Millington to Harger and the Caro branch. In 1998 they began operating the CSX Port Huron sub from Saginaw to Brown City and in 2004 the Central Michigan lines to Midland and Durand. H&E became part of RailAmerica which was acquired by the Genesee & Wyoming in 2012.
