An iron mine worked 1912 through 1918, shipping 134,482 tons of ore from its 281-foot shaft and two levels before consolidation into Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co's Spies-Virgil operation during the late 1920s.

The Virgil Mine was located in Iron River in Iron County.
