Earlier called the Hemlock Mine, the Amasa Mine was located about 12 miles northwest of Crystal Falls. The mine was operated by the Hemlock River Mining Company which was a subsidiary of Pickands, Mather & Company. The mine was serviced by both the Milwaukee Road and the Chicago & Northwestern.
Also known as the Amasa-Porter mine.
Time Line
1916. The Amasa-Porter mine is all low phos, some of it is so low that it comes within the Bessemer limit. A careful selection is being made of all the ores mined and a Bessemer and a non-Bessemer grade is being produced. The Bessemer is easily salable as such and is bringing a handsome price.
