Owned by: H.B. Swain in 1887 then by Cherry Valley Furnace Co. in 1891.

Method: Underground, 100 feet.

Railroad connection: C&NW to Escanaba dock. Later by the MILW as well.

Until: 1892

Lifetime Production: 2,844 tons in 1892.

Cherry Valley ore.

The Lee Peck Mine was located east of Crystal Falls. It was opened by H.B. Swain in 1887 and then taken over by the Cherry Valley Furnace Company in 1891, shipping 2,844 tons of ore through 1892, working to a depth of 100 feet. [MINDAT]

Property description: SW-NE Section 26, T43N-R32W, which is the 40 acres between N46-5-39, N46-5-52, W88-16-5 and W88-16-24.


Time Line

1885. First explored under a lease by J.H. Parks and others, finding a fair sized body of good ore. [DD-1902-1206]

1887. May. The Lee Peck mine continues to improve. A pit in the north end is in hard hematite ore of very fine quality. [DD-1887-0521]

1891. Operations are soon to be resumed at the Lee Peck mine and will be prosecuted on a large scale. The mine is known to have a large vein of rich ore and its development means an addition to the shipping mines of the district. It is located less than a half mile from the Armenia's mine track.
