Notes
Blue Jacket Mine was started in 1870 between Ironwood and Bessemer.
BLUE JACKET MINE, which lies east of the former, and remains now precisely as it was when I saw it and described it one year ago. Work was soon after discontinued and none has since been done. The estate consists of a ¼ section of land— the S. E. ¼, Sec. 18, 47, 46, and four shafts have been sunk to the maximum depth of 160 feet. It is one of the Burton group of mines that has passed to the control of the Bessemer Consolidated Mining Co. Daniel McGarry, President, 101 St. Clair street, Cleveland, O. Product for 1887, 2,070 tons.
Time Line
1899. Property is located just northeast of the Newport, embracing the southeast quarter of section 18, T47N-R46E. Four shafts were sunk upon it prior to 1896, and since that date nothing has been done. The property has been secured by Captain William Stephens, of Ironwood, who will explore it this year. He has an idea that work done further north from the footwall than previous explorations will bring better results, and he will begin upon this theory. While it was active the property produced 1,799 tons or ore. Capt. Stephens held the position of mining captain for several years at the Newport mine and is familiar with the formation of that vicinity. He will go outside of the old shaft in beginning his explorations. [INR-1899-0527]
