Notes

A former copper mine located 3 to 4 miles east of Toltec in Greenland Township in Ontonagon County. The property is comprised of 160 acres.

Very little is known of the Firesteel Mining Company. It was organized in 1852 to work property adjacent to the Indiana Mining Company. The company sank one shaft to 50 feet where a 1,000 pound mass of copper was found. Mining was conducted until 1855 when all operations ceased. All equipment was removed from the Firesteel and moved to the nearby Douglass Houghton Mine. Workings include an adit and a shaft, but there are also numerous test pits along strike on the parcel as noted by a mine inspector.
