Notes
The Franklin Junior Mine was located near Boston in Houghton County. It was first worked in 1895 and had 4 shafts on the Pewabic lode and 1 shaft on the Allouez lode. The mine was reported to never have been profitable.
Time Line
1860. Albany & Boston Mining Company first organized and sold to Peninsula Company in 1882.
1895. The A&B property was sold to the Franklin company and is now known as the Franklin Junior mine. [CHBK]
1897. Production will begin at the Franklin Junior mine as soon as arrangements are completed with the Mineral Range railroad to transport rock from the Junior to the old mine where it will be taken by the mine's railroad to the incline and down to the Franklin mill to be treated. This is Superintendent Pope's plan, at least for the coming summer, it being considered cheaper to transport the rock and use a head in the Franklin mill than to start up the old Peninsula mill for only one head. The gauge of the Franklin's railroad is different than the Mineral Range, so the rock will be transferred to the mine cars when the roads join and run down the incline in them. Thus, in the declining days of the old Franklin the Franklin Junior is commencing to take her place. [CN-1897-0309]
