Mining Disasters With Fatalities
This is a list of fatal accidents from Michigan mines where 3 or more minors were killed. There were many more single accidents that are not reported.
1874. February 13. Phoenix Mine, Phoenix, Keweenaw County - Dynamite explosion - 6 fatalities (C)
1883. April 10. Keelridge Mine, Norway, Dickenson County - Engine house caves in 1,000 feel into mine, 8 fatalities (I)
1887. July. Vulcan Mine, Vulcan, Dickenson County - Lose tram car gets away, striking cage of miners in shaft, 4 fatalities (I)
1893. May 14. Red Jacket Shaft Mine, Calumet, Houghton County - Overwind of hoisting cage - 10 fatalities (C)
1893. September 28. Mansfield Mine, Crystal Falls, Iron County - Inrush of water from river above - 40 fatalities (I)
1895. September 7. Osceola Mine, Calumet, Houghton County - Fire on 27th level - 30 fatalities (C)
1901. June 4. Chapin Mine, Iron Mountain, Dickenson County - Dynamite explosion - 8 fatalities (I)
1907. December 7. Rolling Mill Mine, Negaunee, Marquette County - Skip fell - 10 fatalities (I)
1911. May 5. Hartford-Cambria #2, Negaunee, Marquette County - Fire in mine - 7 fatalities (I)
1912. May 13. Norrie Mine, Ironwood, Gogebic County. - Mine cave-in - 7 fatalities (I)
1914. July 14. Balkan Mine, Palatka, Iron County. - Water rush in rise - 7 fatalities (I)
1918. February 21. Amasa-Porter Mine, Crystal Falls, Iron County - Cave-in by water - 17 fatalities (I)
1926. November 3. Barnes Hecker Mine, Ishpeming, Marquette County - Flood in mine - 51 fatalities (I)
1927. October 29. Quincy Mine Shaft #2, Hancock, Houghton County - Fall of rock in shaft - 7 fatalities (C)
1952. October 30. Herron Alpena Enterprises, Herron, Alpena County - Shaft explosion - 5 fatalities (G)
1959. June 1. Sherwood Mine, Mineral Hills (Iron River), Iron County - Inrush of hot gases and steam - 6 fatalities (I)
