Story: Dispatching the Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena in 1925

The Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena railroad was a common-carrier railroad which mainly transported logs from the forest to the White Lumber Company in Boyne City. The original line was built in 1893 from Boyne City reaching Boyne Falls and a connection with the Grand Rapids & Indiana railroad. Over the next few years, many branch lines were constructed and it reached a connection with the Michigan Central railroad at Gaylord in 1905.

In 1914, the line began building east from Gaylord towards Alpena, reaching Atlanta that year, and finally into Alpena in 1918. Most of the line, between Moore (near Boyne Falls) and Alpena, had little traffic after 1925 and was abandoned and pulled up in 1935.

Trains operating on most railroads during this time period were controlled by timetable, as well as by train orders received from the dispatcher. These were communicated to station agents or interlocking tower operators who transcribed the orders on "flimsies" (tissue paper forms) and given to conductors and engineers. Sometimes, conductors and engineers stopped at waypoints along the route and received new train orders directly via railroad telephone.

The following train orders were documented from during a period between February and April, 1925 and were recorded on a steno-type book by the BCG&A dispatcher who was based in Boyne City. He had a telephone circuit which stretched across the state along the railroad to Alpena. During the time period, it appears that station agents were usually in place during the day at Boyne City (probably the dispatcher himself), Boyne Falls, Gaylord, Atlanta and Alpena. All of the orders were issued under the signature of "C.M.D" which are likely the dispatcher's initials or the initials of the superintendent. Only one dispatcher is in this book and he worked between about 6:00 am and as late as 10:00 pm, six days per week. The railroad doesn't to appear to have operated overnight or on Sunday. But there are exceptions. In a few cases, "CMD" would leave an order at 12:01 am for a train leaving Boyne City during the night when he wasn't there. It would have been the only train operating on the railroad during that time.

Each order has a person's name on it, likely the conductor or operator receiving the order from the dispatcher. These are omitted on this webpage for brevity purposes.

In addition to the main BCG&A stations at Boyne City, Boyne Falls (GR&I connection), Gaylord (MCRR connection), Atlanta and Alpena (D&M connection), the following other locations are mentioned on various train orders: Anderson Spur, Brenney's, Cedar Spur, Donnely, Green, Johnson, Luty, Marion, Meaford, Moore, North Elmira, Orville, Paisley, Spar, Staley, Stoddard, Watson and Yuill. These were not likely to be staffed stations and probably didn't have station buildings at all.  Just a wayside phone booth.

The following locomotive numbers were identified on various extra trains: 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, and 12. An order was also given to "Ford Sedan", likely a modified vehicle on rail wheels used for inspections or travel. When the order was directed to a numbered, timetabled train, the engine number was omitted.

This 1925 train order book was purchased at a train show in the Detroit area.
