Railroad: Port Huron and Northwestern Railway Company

This road operated as a narrow gauge railroad in the thumb of Michigan, approximately between Port Huron and Saginaw. It became part of the Pere Marquette system.

Operated: 10 Years.

Sold: 1889 - to Flint & Pere Marquette.

Notes

The line through Marlette was converted to standard gauge in 1889. The line to Port Austin was converted to standard gauge in 1898. The line east of Tappan was converted to standard gauge in 1884. [MRL]


Time Line

1879. Line built from Port Huron to Croswell, and extended to Palms (via Deckerville) in 1880.

1881. A branch line is built from Zion to Vassar (via Yale, Marlette and Mayville). It is extended to Hoyt (Saginaw) the following year.

1882. The railroad is built from Port Huron to Tappan (four miles west of Port Huron). In 1889 it is extended from Tappan to Yale.

1882. Line extended from Palms to Port Austin and Harbor Beach.

1889. The PH&NW is purchased by the Flint & Pere Marquette, which becomes the Pere Marquette in 1899.

1892. Line is extended from Port Austin to Grindstone City.

1917. W.S. Sayres Jr., acting for the federal court, will offer that portion of the PM railroad system formerly known as the Port Huron & Northwestern railroad for sale here March 23. [LSJ-1917-0222]
