Railroad: The Bear Lake and Eastern Rail Road Company

The Bear Lake & Eastern was primarily a logging road which was built in 1876 as the Bear Lake Train Railway from Pierport (in Manistee County) 16 miles to Maple Grove. It became the BL&E in 1882. The line was abandoned in 1902.

This was a 3' gauge line, owned by the Bear Lake Lumber Company. [MRRC]


Time Line

1902. This road formerly extended from Pierport to Springdale and was used exclusively for logging purposes. The road currently has 16 miles of track. The road is being abandoned; track has been torn up and sold. [MCR-1902]
