Former Oil Refinery: Leonard Oil Refinery, Alma, MI

The Leonard Refinery operated in Alma from 1936 until 1999. According to the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University, this was the first refinery toi produce high octane gasoline at 96-octane. The throughput of the facility was 55,000 barrels per day and the workforce was 300. Fire damaged the refinery in 1992 and the facility was turn down in 2003. The facility received rail service from the Pere Marquette railway (and later from the C&O).
